A 29-year-old man was arrested in connection with an alleged theft at Home Depot in Lacey.
According to a Lacey Police Department report, Paul Hoa Tran, of Olympia, was identified as the suspect in a theft that took place at the Home Depot on Marvin Road NE in Lacey on Sept. 26.
Store security reported that a man loaded several buckets onto a cart and exited the store without paying. The merchandise, valued at approximately $3,490, was recovered when security stopped the suspect. The suspect was able to flee the scene.
Store security provided authorities a video footage showing Tran trying to exit the store with the buckets, and when he was stopped he fled to a white Toyota 4Runner and left the area. Authorities confirmed the vehicle was registered to Tran.
On Sept. 30, Lacey police officers, with assistance from the Olympia Police Department, located Tran at a residence on Pine Avenue NE in Olympia. He was detained without incident and transported to the Thurston County Corrections Facility.
Further investigation revealed Tran may have been involved in an additional theft at another Home Depot location. A report from the Chehalis store described a similar case on Sept. 3 involving more than $2,000 in stolen merchandise. The suspect was confronted and immediately left without the merchandise.
Another incident at the Lacey store in July involved $455 in stolen goods. In this incident, Tran allegedly stole two, 5-gallon buckets of paint and a moving box. Security personnel “witnessed Paul loading the stolen goods in the back of his 4Runner before leaving the area.”
The total amount of the stolen merchandise from the three incidents was valued at about $5,945.
Tran was booked on charges of organized retail theft and second-degree theft. The case is still under investigation, as Home Depot security is still reviewing surveillance footage to see if the suspect committed thefts at different stores. The suspect has now been trespassed from all Home Depot stores.
