A 40-year-old man was arrested in Olympia following a series of purchases at multiple stores made with a stolen credit card.

The Olympia Police Department identified the suspect as Brandon Lee Penn, of Forks, who was taken into custody at Percival Landing Bathhouse on Aug. 28.

Authorities had been investigating multiple reports of fraudulent transactions that began on Aug. 4, when a purse containing bank cards, cash and personal items was stolen at a shopping center on Plum Street Southeast.

According to the victim, “her card had been used at Dick`s Sporting Goods, Wetzel`s Pretzel, Victoria`s Secret, Pro Image, Buckle, Cinnabon, Best Buy, and Champs," an Olympia Police Department report states.

Additional attempts to make purchases at Best Buy and Champs were reportedly declined. The total value of the stolen property and purchases was estimated at more than $1,800.

Security footage collected from the stores showed a man making transactions with the stolen card. Police compared the surveillance images with photographs of the suspect, ultimately confirming his identity through visible tattoos and clothing that matched stolen merchandise.

Penn was arrested without incident and booked into Thurston County Corrections Facility. He faces multiple charges, including nine counts of second-degree identity theft, 10 counts of third-degree theft and second-degree possession of stolen property.

Scenario of using stolen credit cards so common. It has happened to me also. So why don't stores check ID like they used to? Especially big ticket idems.
