Last Monday, August 21, at around nine o'clock in the evening, a suspect allegedly in possession of a stolen vehicle was detained after a concerned citizen's tip led to his capture at the Hobby Lobby parking lot in Olympia.

An alert witness informed the police that a suspicious-looking man was in a car on their property at 4009 Alonna Drive NE.

The reporting party provided the description and plate number of the car – a dark blue Mazda MZ6 with an Oregon license plate and was traced back to a stolen vehicle reported to the Portland Police Department.

According to the police incident report, the concerned citizen proceeded to tail the suspicious vehicle and informed police dispatch that “the vehicle pulled into the Hobby Lobby parking lot.”

Officers from the Olympia Police Department arrived at the scene and spoke with the person who had reported the crime and the witness pointed out the suspect's car.

A man in a white shirt and black jeans was "about to open the driver-side front door" when the officers approached the car.

The suspect, identified as Charles C. Champ, was promptly detained and positively identified by the reporting person as the man who was driving the stolen vehicle.

The keys to the stolen vehicle were found in the suspect’s front right pocket.

Olympia authorities transported the suspect to Thurston County Jail, where he was booked for possession of a stolen vehicle.

The authorities were also able to contact and return the stolen vehicle to its registered owner.
