In a recent police operation on Thursday, January 4, at 9:30 p.m., officers from the Olympia Police Department (OPD) arrested Bartley Trevor, who was on a felony warrant issued by the Washington Department of Corrections for escape.

The original charge connected to the escape warrant was a second-degree assault while armed with a deadly weapon.

Upon contacting the suspect, officers advised him of the existing warrant and proceeded to detain him with handcuffs.

During a search incident to arrest, a small black bag strapped across the suspect's chest was discovered.

OPD shared in the police report that in narcotics investigations, the black bag raised suspicions of being consistent with how narcotics users often carry and distribute illicit substances.

“This method of carrying is common as it keeps the narcotics close to the user`s body where they know it is safe, more easily defendable, and easy to access,” OPD stated in the police report.

The search of the bag yielded several items indicative of narcotics use, including pieces of aluminum foil folded into squares with small amounts of an off-white powdery substance, a white scale, a glass pipe or "tooter," and small metal picks.

Authorities identified these items as narcotics paraphernalia commonly used in the consumption of illicit substances.

Further inspection of the bag revealed a smaller tan zippered pouch containing a baggy of powdered substance.

“Inside the black bag, was a smaller, tan zippered pouch. Inside the pouch,   located a baggy of an off-white powder substance (similar to the substance on the foil) that we knew to be fentanyl. There was an additional baggy containing a milky-white, glass-like substance that, I knew to be methamphetamine,” OPD reported.

The officer confirmed that the suspected glassy substance was methamphetamine with a field test. “Due to the dangerous nature of the fentanyl, I did not handle/test the fentanyl,” detailed the officer.

Due to these findings, the police established probable cause for unlawful possession of a controlled substance (UPCS).

The suspect was transported and booked into Nisqually Tribal Jail for the existing warrant and an additional charge of UPCS.
