A man was charged with burglary after he allegedly broke into an Olympia building that the owner reportedly said no one has access to.

According to a document from the Thurston County Prosecuting Attorney dated Dec. 8, Mitchel Patrick Irons, 31, of Roy, was charged with second-degree burglary.

Olympia police arrested Irons on Dec. 4 after a real estate agent working for the owner of a building on the 2600 block of Martin Way reported that someone had entered the property and may have remained inside.

A responding police officer contacted a man who was just inside the property, later identified as Irons, and detained him in wrist restraints after the building owner arrived and provided keys to the front door.

Police said Irons appeared to wave someone away prior to being detained. The suspect told authorities that he was inside the building with a friend he only knew by the street name of “G man,” but no other individuals were located inside the property.

A foldable pocketknife was seized from Irons, according to the police report.

During a search of the building, police saw that “multiple sections” of the ceiling had been removed and damaged. In one room, police said, a ladder was propped up against a wall and tiles had been ripped from the ceiling.

Hard drives were also removed and taken from a room containing video surveillance equipment, which was broken into through the drywall, according to police.

In the kitchen, police noted, more ceiling tiles had been removed, electrical systems appeared to have been damaged, and black pipes were scattered across the floor with a metal pipe cutter located near the refrigerator.

Three HVAC systems were also taken out from the wall, the police report said. The building owner said each HVAC system cost approximately $15,000.

Police said Irons had to be cleared at the Capitol Medical Center prior to being jailed because records showed that he previously fell unconscious inside the same building. The suspect admitted that he overdosed on fentanyl that time.

Irons was booked at the Thurston County Jail for first-degree burglary.
