A man was shot dead late Sunday night at Rainier Vista Park following an apparent argument, according to Lacey police.

The Lacey Police Department said in a Monday media release that authorities were alerted to gunshots coming from the southern area of the park at about 11 p.m. on Sunday. The shooting happened following the annual July 3 pre-Independence Day fireworks display there.

The Thurston County Coroner’s office identified the victim as Jordan Pilbro, 43, of Yelm.

As officers headed to the area, another caller reported that there was a man with gunshot wounds in a field outside the park, on the 5400 block of 50th Avenue SE.

Police immediately rendered aid to the man, but he did not make it.

Police say the incident appears to have stemmed from an argument in the neighborhood that later moved into a field near the park.

The southern portion of Rainier Vista Park was temporarily closed as authorities took over the scene.

Witnesses described the suspect as a black male in his 20s wearing all black clothing.

“We’re continuing to interview witnesses,” according to Detective Sgt. Shannon Barnes of the Lacey Police Department. She added that Lacey detectives continue to investigate the incident.

“We’re asking anyone who has not come forward and might have seen what happened or anyone who might have video from that time to contact us or Crimestoppers,” Barnes added.
