Marriage license fee to increase in Thurston County

Posted

It is going to cost more money to get hitched in Thurston County.

Marriage licenses will increase by $100 on Sunday, July 27. The last day to apply for a marriage license at the current rate of $72 is Friday, July 25. After that day, the price increases to $172.

The price increase stems from legislation to support a program to pair law enforcement officers with mental health professionals in order to respond to domestic violence cases.

“This is a significant fee increase,” said Thurston County Auditor Mary Hall in an announcement about the new fee. “We want to make sure couples who are getting married soon know they can save money by applying early.”

Marriage licenses issued by Thurston County are good for 60 days, and can be used anywhere in Washington state.

Applications for marriage licenses can be done at the Thurston County auditor’s office or online.

JW read the article. This is due to a state law and is not going into county coffers.

When compared to the cost of a divorce, this license is cheap.
