New pooch expands support services at Thurston County courthouse

Posted

The Thurston County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has expanded its courthouse facility dog program with the addition of Sky, an 18-month-old Labrador retriever.

Trained by Assistance Dogs Northwest, Sky joins Marshal, a veteran courthouse facility dog, to enhance emotional support and stress relief services for victims, witnesses and community members navigating the legal system.

Sky joins courthouse team

Sky has swiftly impacted the courthouse since her introduction in September 2024.

The dog’s demeanor complements Marshal’s years of experience as a certified courthouse facility dog.

According to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, the dogs support those individuals facing emotionally challenging legal proceedings.

"Sky’s presence brings warmth and reassurance to those who need it most," shared Victim Advocate Sherry Landon and Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Rosemary Fitzgerald on the office’s official website page.

Sky’s placement was made possible at no cost to the county. The expenses were covered by donations from Assistance Dogs Northwest and support from the Nisqually Indian Tribe.

Marshal, trained by Assistance Dogs of Hawaii, continues to provide invaluable service.

On Nov. 21, 2024, both dogs participated in the 20th annual National Adoption Day celebration at Thurston County Family and Juvenile Court, where five families finalized adoptions.

"We were truly honored to be part of such a heartwarming day," the office said.

Thurston’s facility dogs go global

The courthouse facility dog program has garnered attention from international visitors.

On Nov. 6, 2024, Margarita Zaide  from Argentina toured the Thurston County facility as part of a visit to programs across Washington state.

"We hope her time at our office, as well as other local offices, helps their courthouse dog program get off to a great start," the office shared on their official page. "Every courthouse needs a dog … or two.”

During the visit, handlers Kim Carroll and Wendy Ireland demonstrated Marshal’s role in relieving stress in courtroom settings.

Sky also played an active role, showcasing the impact of these facility dogs.

The visit highlighted the program’s effectiveness as a model for similar initiatives worldwide.

Expanding county support efforts

The courthouse facility dog program prioritizes community engagement and care.

Sky recently attended the Courthouse Dog Conference in early September alongside Marshal to connect with handlers and facility dogs from across the globe.

"This is always an inspiring conference," the office noted. "We have an opportunity to meet and learn from amazing handlers and facility dogs from around the world!”

With the addition of Sky, the courthouse strengthens its support for vulnerable individuals.

"With Sky and Marshal on our team, we’re better equipped to serve and support our community," the office stated. "Welcome aboard, Sky!"
