Some heavy lifting is going to take place this week along Fones Road in Olympia, as work crews will demolish existing pavement from Pacific Avenue to Woodland Trail in order to prepare for base paving.
The demolition work is scheduled to start as soon as Wednesday, July 15, with base paving set to happen from July 20 through July 23.
“Until paving is complete, drivers should be prepared to drive on a gravel surface at the north end of Fones Road,” said the City of Olympia Public Works Department in a construction and traffic alert.
“Expect significant delays until paving is complete and allow extra travel time when traveling through the area. Use of alternate routes is highly encouraged.”
The work will generally occur between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m. Local and emergency access to Fones Road will be maintained during the course of the work. Reduced lanes will remain in place through the end of construction, which is scheduled to end in fall.
Construction on the Fones Road Corridor Project started in November 2024 with the goal of transforming it into a safer corridor for bicyclists, motorists, pedestrians and truckers.
The estimated cost of the corridor project is $24.5 million with the City of Olympia contributing more than $13 million. The city has also received more than $11 million in grants from state and federal sources to help pay for the project.
The project also aims to create a safer connection to transit stops on 18th and Pacific avenues, as well as add landscaping and lighting along the corridor, which measures less than three-quarters of a mile.

Thanks for the update.
It started in November 2024? It sure seems like it started in 2022 or '23.
