Mabel Thackery, North Thurston Public Schools (NTPS) mental health specialist, was named Washington School Counselor Association (WSCA) Advocate of the Year.

The Advocate of the Year award honors an individual’s dedication to the education profession and the students of the state, according to the association’s website

“This individual goes above and beyond the normal demands of their profession to advocate for school counselors,” the association’s website states.

Thackery has testified before the Washington Legislature on student mental health issues, as part of the statewide School-Based Behavioral Health & Suicide Prevention subcommittee of the Children & Youth Behavioral Health Work Group, NTPS Executive Director of Communications Amy Blondin said in an email to The JOLT News.

Blondin said that as a mental health specialist, Thackery serves multiple schools in the whole district.

“Mabel is a tremendous advocate for school-based mental health, which helps ensure students are supported and able to thrive in school and life," Blondin said.

"She and all of our mental health specialists provide much-needed student mental health services!”

Blondin added that the association will honor Thackery at an annual spring conference.

The WSCA is a professional organization that has officially served Washington school counselors since 1965.
