The North Thurston Public Schools Board of Directors was selected as a 2025 Board of Distinction by the Washington State School Directors Association.
The award honors school boards in the state that have demonstrated effective governance in relation to the Washington School Board standards, according to the awarding body’s website.
Common elements among applicants included strategic planning, legislative advocacy, and the use of disaggregated student data to direct multi-pronged improvement efforts.
“Our (board) was highlighted for their ongoing focus on high-quality early learning opportunities that prepare students for success, which is one of our district’s five strategic goals. WSSDA pointed to the (board’s) efforts to include community voices in early learning decision-making,” stated the board’s website in announcing the award.
North Thurston Public Schools, under the school board’s leadership, has exerted efforts in enhancing kindergarten programs, securing funding through a capital levy to build the Lacey Education and Family (LEAF) Center, adding no-cost preschool spots, as well as community partnerships during the past several years.
This year’s list of awardees is made up of 49 school boards across three district-size categories — large, medium and small.

My only measurement is whether the students are reading, writing and arithmeticing better than others. Are we in the top 10% in the country? If not, get us there.
