The Olympia City Council recognized 13 middle school students whose artwork is featured in the 2024 Water Resources Stewardship Through Art calendar on Tuesday, October 17.

Olympia Public Works’ drinking water specialist Erin Conine explained that the calendar program aims to bring awareness to stormwater pollution prevention and water conservation best practices.

Conine added that the division developed key stewardship messages for the contest and solicited entries from students at public and private middle schools as well as home-schoolers.

"After the artwork is selected, we add supplemental information to the key message for each month. We are happy to have the students help us spread the word," Conine said as she thanked all who participated in this year's program.

Susan McCleary, senior program specialist for Stormwater, announced the winners for this year:

Councilmember Dani Madrone commended the Public Works' strategy for promoting environmental messages and celebrating local youth talents through the art calendar program.

Mayor Cheryl Selby thanked the program for engaging talented youth and creatively educating the public about climate issues.

Councilmember Lisa Parshley agreed with the mayor, saying, "You can educate people in many ways. I think art is the most beautiful way – one that gets you in the heart and makes you look at your actions."

According to McCleary, the calendars will be available at all local schools and in the lobby of Olympia City Hall.

As she has done in past years, Councilmember Lisa Parshley will display the calendar at her clinic, where staff eagerly anticipate seeing ‘next month’s’ image.
