Olympia City Mayor Cheryl Selby announced that Manager Jay Burney received the Advancing the Profession Award from the Washington City/County Management Association (WCMA) on August 10.
The statewide award recognizes individuals who have "significantly succeeded in advancing one of the following initiatives: intergovernmental cooperation, diversity, open government, or organizational culture."
Selby announced Burney's achievement at the council meeting on Tuesday, highlighting the city manager's passion and dedication to leading numerous initiatives.
The mayor mentioned that Burney had secured funding for three full-time positions to advance the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) work within the local government and the community.
The mayor enumerated other city's efforts under Burney's leadership:
"The city has seen the incredible accomplishments Jay has made in three years that he has led the city of Olympia… it is a fitting and huge achievement that his work is also seen and recognized by peers around the state," Selby commented.
"Although this is an individual award, it is a recognition of the amazing work of this council, and our staff are working hard to create an environment inside our organization. And for those we serve to feel a sense of belonging and that our community is safe and welcoming. That is our job as public servants," Burney said. "Our work and dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion will remain among our highest priorities in everything we do."
Established in 1959, WCMA is a non-profit organization that operates under the guidance of an eleven-member board elected by its membership.
As an affiliate of the International City/County Management Association, WCMA is committed to enhancing the expertise of city managers, county managers, and other municipal administrators. Its primary objective is to improve the quality of urban governance by implementing effective professional management practices.
Over 250 managers and assistants are members of WCMA.

Some name correction here is warranted:
The old name of the park was PRIEST POINT no plural
The current name is SQUAXIN park--the island is not involved in any way. The name honors the tribe whose land it is, not the island.
