Olympia equity commission introduces subcommittee for Community Oversight of Law Enforcement project

Posted

Director of Strategic Planning and Performance Stacey Ray convened with Olympia’s Social Justice and Equity Commission Monday, July 24,  to discuss the commission’s model of care for the Community Oversight of Law Enforcement project.

A model of care guides the co-design process that will be the basis of drafting a recommendation to the council.

The meeting is part of the kickoff session that continues the three-tier process of the oversight project.

“As proposed by the consultant team, we've embarked on a co-design process to help develop the recommendation. And this is a model that emphasizes a relational and community-based approach to proactively designing Community Oversight that's going to meet the needs of our community,” Ray said.

The meeting revolved around updates, model of care discussion, values sharing and the next steps to be taken.

Subcommittee

Ray introduced a focused subcommittee assigned to learn about law enforcement and engage with other co-designers on behalf of the whole commission.

The subcommittee members are commissioners Parfait Bassalé, Mark Hodgson, Rachelle Martin, Kevin Mattison, Fauziva Mohamedali, Jessicarae Nuñez, Marianne Ozmun-Wells, and Robin Rosen-Evans.

Members of the subcommittee will mainly do their collaborative work in person. Outlined below are their specific roles.

  • Learn about law enforcement and the Olympia Police Department
  • Engage as co-designers on behalf of the Commission
  • Share updates and learnings with the Commission
  • Communicate about the process with community stakeholders
  • Develop a draft recommendation for the Commission
