The Olympia Fire Department is observing Fire Prevention Week from Oct. 9 to Oct. 15 with an emphasize on the importance of household fire escape planning.
This year’s theme, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape,” highlights the need for families to prepare and practice evacuation procedures in case of fire emergencies.
Officials said homes nowadays burn faster, giving residents only a short time to evacuate once a fire starts. The department is urging residents to make sure smoke alarms are functional and everyone in the home knows at least two ways to exit each room.
Families are also advised to establish an outdoor meeting spot and practice escape plans twice a year, once during the day and once during night time.
To promote safety awareness, the Olympia Fire Department is hosting an open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, at its headquarters at 100 Eastside St. NE in Olympia. The event is going to feature fire safety demonstrations, distribution of smoke detectors, and guidance on creating personalized escape plans.
Residents seeking more details about Fire Prevention Week activities can contact the fire department at 360-753-8348. For more information, visit the National Fire Protection Association’s website.
This year’s celebration is the city’s 100th year of celebrating Fire Prevention Week.
