Olympia grade school’s "Black lives matter" display vandalized

An Olympia grade school’s exhibit for the Black Lives Matter movement was vandalized several times over the past two weeks, while the city celebrates Black History Month.

“This morning, all of the cups were knocked down, except for ‘Matter,’” Principal Jen Brotherton told KING-TV News reporter Drew Mikkelson.

"When students ask me, ‘Mrs. Brotherton, what are we going to do? Are we going to put it back up?’ My answer will always be 'Yes,'" Brotherton said.  Boston Harbor Elementary School’s Black History Month display has been removed six times by unknown persons since the school started the practice last year, reports King 5. “And ‘Jesus’ was put instead of ‘Black Lives.’”

The display is an assemblage of plastic cups pressed through the school’s chain-link fence that  spell “Black Lives Matter.”

Brotherton asserted that they will continue to repair and improve on the display, explaining that even when it was taken down last year, there was no discussion of trying something different for this year.

"We will continue to put this up all month as it continues to get knocked down,” she said to KING-TV. “That's what we're teaching our kids, that's what it's all about: being resilient."

The vandals have not yet been identified. One addition to the display was added since the first time it was destroyed: an outdoor surveillance camera, aimed toward the fence.
