Olympia launches art project for National Day of Racial Healing

Posted

The City of Olympia is inviting community members to participate in a meaningful art project for the National Day of Racial Healing on Jan. 21.

The National Day of Racial Healing encourages communities to reflect on shared values, establish common ground and take collective action to address the lingering effects of racism.

This day will be marked in Olympia through an art project. Participants are asked to imagine a society where everyone feels safe, respected and included, regardless of appearance or background.

The project asks, "What would racial healing look like to you?"

Participants can express their ideas through various artistic mediums.

Submissions can be visual arts, such as drawings or paintings, or written expressions like poems. To participate, put your submission on a 3.5 inch by 5 inch card. Submissions can be dropped off at Olympia City Hall, 601 4th Ave. E — Attn. Keli Drake.

The submissions will be considered for window display to recognize the National Day of Racial Healing. The main deadline is noon on Jan. 17, but contributions will be accepted until Jan. 31.

The event also encourages community conversations about racial healing. For conversation guides and resources, visit www.DayofRacialHealing.org.

Love it, love it, love it. Just because you've never dealt with trauma surrounding your race, doesn't mean no one else has! Let's acknowledge these truths that occur every day and try to offer support to those affected.
