An Olympia man was charged with two felonies after allegedly choking his own father because of his father’s spending habits and girlfriend.
Olympia police arrested the 32-year old suspect on July 17 after his father reported getting choked by him during an argument.
The father told police that his son choked him while he was asleep and yelled at him because he was “in a bad place” and “full of anger.”
Police observed what appeared to be cuts caused by fingernails and red marks on the father’s skin. He also said his throat hurt.
The father said he woke up to his son choking him. He started pushing back against the suspect and told him to stop because he was having trouble breathing, but his son kept his hand around his neck and said something along the lines of, “I’m going to kill you if you don’t stop.”
The suspect eventually left the room, at which point the father called law enforcement.
The father said his son had been becoming more violent over the last few weeks, threatening to kill him while holding a knife at one point.
Police found the suspect walking toward his dad’s car. Police say the suspect said that he had been stressed the past few months because of his father’s “money spending sprees” and his father’s “girlfriend’s using him.”
The suspect admitted that he “lost it,” choking his dad and yelling at him while he was asleep. The suspect also said he threatened to kill his father. He said he just wanted his dad to realize how upset he had become from all the stress.
The officer noted that the father appeared to be trying to downplay the incident, stressing that he wanted his son to get help.
The suspect was booked into the Thurston County Jail for second-degree assault and harassment – threats to kill then was charged by the Thurston County Prosecuting Attorney on July 19.
