A transient Olympia man was arrested after he allegedly shoplifted multiple items from a retail store and later used pepper spray on loss-prevention officers who asked him to return the stolen goods.

According to Olympia police, Kelly Dean Stewart, 40, was arrested last Wed., Dec. 1,  after a reported robbery at the JC Penney store at Capital Mall.

Two loss-prevention officers told police that they witnessed Stewart take several items from the store and exit without paying for the items. The stolen goods were valued at $210.

The employees said they contacted Stewart, who was “argumentative” but returned most of the unpaid items, except for a leather wallet in his pants pocket.

The loss prevention officers said Stewart took out a can of pepper spray and sprayed them both in the face.

The employees retreated to the store and police later located the suspect inside a different establishment.

Stewart was booked at the Thurston County Jail for first-degree robbery.
