Olympia School District educator named Regional Teacher of the Year

Scott Le Duc, a Career and Technical Education (CTE) teacher from Capital High School in Olympia, was named the Educational Service District (ESD) 113 Regional Teacher of the Year.

Regional teachers of the year are characterized as exceptional classroom educators, who guide students to excellence, build positive school cultures, and demonstrate leadership.

ESD 113 announced in an announcement that Le Duc teaches courses, such as Game Design, Film Cinematography and International Baccalaureate Film, using a teaching philosophy of letting students direct their own learning.

“Scott is an innovative educator whose systems-forward thinking helps students become the best versions of themselves,” said ESD 113 Superintendent Dr. Flip Herndon in a statement included in the announcement.

This year, Le Duc also launched a staff Artificial Intelligence committee and produces monthly “AI-Minute” videos for staff meetings, helping colleagues use technology to strengthen teaching.

“Scott is widely respected by students, families, colleagues, and industry partners,” said Capital High School Principal Condee Wood in a statement included in the announcement. "Students describe him as both demanding and deeply supportive — an educator who pushes them to achieve more than they believed possible.

The release stated Le Duc has been with Capital High School for 28 years, and has shaped thousands of students and the broader learning culture.

ESD coordinators manage the nomination process for the Regional Teacher of the Year award. Regional winners advance to a state competition, resulting in one educator being selected as Washington's Teacher of the Year, who is then nominated for a national award.
