At a meeting on Thursday, May 22, the Olympia School District (OSD) swore in one returning student representative and three new student representatives for the 2025-26 school year.

The new representatives are Emma McDonald of Olympia Regional Learning Academy, Juniper Hummel-Church of Avanti High School, and Malachi Cardona of Capital High School. Vy Le of Olympia High School retained her role.

The OSD Board of Directors annually selects high school juniors or seniors as student representatives for all schools with grades 9-12.

“The students serve in an advisory capacity at board meetings and may cast nonbinding, advisory votes on motions before the board,” the district’s website stated.

The students are also liaisons for student leadership at their schools and report on the work of the board and district activities to fellow students.

The board members thanked outgoing representatives Sovana Roberts, Alijah Manzanares and Declan Borden.

“I'm deeply appreciative of the way in which all of you … really dug in and expressed yourselves in a way that was sincere, honest, forthright, deep in the discussion about what we're doing with district policy,” OSD Board President Scott Clifthorne said.

Clifthorne also led the swearing in of the student representatives.

“It is an honor that you were selected to assist the Olympia school board to guide the education of our community's children,” read Clifthorne from the oath of office.

This year, the application deadline for student representative nominations was April 6.
