This is the first year the Olympia Timberland Library will host the main expo event at the library. The first Zine Fest was held in 2015, and aside from a brief hiatus due to Covid, has been held annually ever since at the Olympia Center and West Central Park. This year the kickoff event and main expo will take place both inside and outside of the Olympia Library.

Event organizer and Timberland Regional LIBRARY Librarian, Aggie Burstein, defines zines as, “Independently created publications that anyone can make about anything, for any reason.” Zines can also be described as self-published works that contain unique content and perspectives not often found in the mainstream media. Zines are typically made in small quantities, may be hand-written or drawn, typed on a typewriter or a computer, copied and pasted using found images, photocopied in color or black and white, and bound with staples or thread using any variety of techniques.

The Olympia Timberland Library houses a collection of over 1,500 zines, while the Lacey Timberland Library has zine “kits” with zines on various subjects compiled into small kits for checkout. The original Olympia Zine Library was housed by the independent bookstore, Last Word Books.

Zine Fest offers an opportunity to celebrate or learn about zines, buy/sell/trade zines, and connect with others who are interested or involved in the zine community.

The Kickoff Event on Saturday, September 9th, held inside the library, will give “Zinesters” an opportunity to finish their zines or start something new using library-provided supplies and resources such as computers, copiers, and free printing. Also included in the kickoff event will be button making, “zine-go-bingo,” open mic readings, and zine swaps.

An extension of the celebration will take place Sunday night at Le Voyeur at 7 p.m. with a Zine Reading with Ayun Halliday, Jonah Barnett, Mara Gervais, Minhee Kim, Nhatt Nichols, Sierra Jane, and Tanisha Jackland.

This event is free to the public, and all are welcome. To learn more about the event, visit the Olympia Zine Fest website or follow on Facebook and Instagram.
