Olympia woman allegedly threatened to kill over cigarette

An Olympia woman allegedly threatened to kill a fellow resident of a family shelter after she was refused a cigarette, leading to about an hour-long standoff with police.

Olympia police said Meagan Kelly Diener, 36, was arrested on Mar. 4 after a reported disturbance at a family shelter near downtown Olympia.

A female resident told police that Diener attempted to break into her apartment while armed with what seemed to be a knife. The suspect allegedly stood outside one window of the woman’s house, saying “I am going to f*cking kill you.”

The woman feared that Diener would break into her unit and kill her and her children, she told police, adding that the suspect supposedly had a shotgun.

Diener had been acting strangely for several days, said the woman,  and had grown aggressive towards her because she did not give the suspect a cigarette.

Officers extracted the woman and her two children from their house through a window.

One officer noted that the screen to the woman’s house had been “cut with some kind of object.”

Several officers then attempted to establish communication with Diener for over an hour, according to one police report.

The suspect refused to come out, prompting police to request SWAT assistance.

Shortly after officers made the request, however, they managed to communicate with Diener and convinced her to exit the building.

The suspect was booked at the Thurston County Jail for felony harassment and residential burglary.

Police found a black stake, about nine inches long, near the entrance to the woman’s unit.
