Pet licensing is now available online through the Joint Animal Services Commission's website.

Joint Animal Services Board Member and Tumwater Councilmember Michael Althauser announced their new online services during the regular Tumwater city council meeting on Monday, August 2. The councilmember shared that pet owners’ can sign-up, renew, or update their license information at online licensing services

Prior to the online licensing system being introduced in mid-July, pet owners needed to call or visit Joint Animal Services to license their pets.

Pet licenses are required for all dogs and cats within the city limits of Olympia, Lacey, and Tumwater. In addition, the city of Olympia also allows potbelly pigs as pets and requires them to be licensed.

According to Thurston County’s animal regulation, “It is unlawful for any person to own, keep, or have control of any dog in the county (or dog and cat in the city) unless the person has procured a license therefor.”

The license fees vary depending on the animal's status. Joint Animal Services provides the following guidelines for pet owners within Olympia, Lacey, and Tumwater:

Dogs

  • Spayed/neutered: $16.00
  • Not Spayed/neutered: $28.00

Cats

  • Spayed/neutered: $10
  • Not Spayed/neutered: $18.00

Fees are $2.00 to $4.00 less for addresses in Thurston County outside of city limits.

Potbelly Pigs (Olympia only)

  • Neutered: $16.00

Joint Animal Services offers reduced fees for low-income seniors who have spayed or neutered pets. The fee reduction also applies to service dogs.

Funds from the license fees are used to support JASCOM’s animal services. These services include helping in the identification of pets who are wearing a license tag and running a 24-hour Lost Pet Hotline.

Other community services include removing dead animals from the roadway, providing shelter and care for all homeless domestic animals, as well as holding training for responsible pet care.

The county imposes a $103 fine for residents who fail to comply with the licensing requirement within Olympia, Lacey, and Tumwater, and a $52 fine in unincorporated areas within Thurston County.
