Lacey joined other communities in Washington in proclaiming August 31 as Overdose Awareness Day.

During its public meeting on August 17, the Lacey City Council said the city joined the One Washington Memorandum of Understanding to access funds vital to responding to the opioid epidemic in our community.

“Like many communities across Washington state, the national opioid epidemic, and other overdoses, pose a significant threat to public health and safety in Lacey,” the council said.

“People who experience an overdose are deserving of quality care and kindness,” it added.

Resource fair Thurston County Overdose Awareness Day

Katie Strozyk, Thurston County Opioid Response coordinator, invited community members to join the Thurston County Overdose Awareness Day on August 31 from 1 to 7 p.m. at Heritage Park in downtown Olympia.

Strozyk said the event will feature a resource fair with different treatment providers and social service agencies. There will also be memorial activities for the victims.

Naloxone and Opioid Response Training

Strozyk also invited community members to join the Naloxone and Opioid Response Training at the Virgil Clarkson Senior Center in Lacey on September 7 at 12:30 p.m. The event is in partnership with the Thurston County Chamber of Commerce.

In Washington State, it is legal to carry naloxone, which reverses an opioid-related overdose, regardless of age.

For a 24-hour help desk, the public may contact the Washington Recovery Helpline at 1-866-789-1511. For more information on substance overdose, visit www.stopoverdose.org.
