Join a reception and poetry reading featuring Frank Winters' photographs on February 28, 4-6 p.m. at Browsers Bookshop.
The reception is for a show of the photographs taken in Coney Island between the years 2005 and 2025.
The photos and show were inspired by two books: A Coney Island of the Mind by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and City Lights: Lawrence Ferlinghetti and the Biography of a Bookstore. City Lights is the preeminent counterculture, independent bookstore, founded in 1953 in the United States.
There will be a poetry reading of selections from A Coney Island of the Mind by the photographer's daughter, Maria Kokorowski (MFA School of the Art Institute of Chicago) at 5. One of the poems to be read is “I Am Waiting,” a poem that was written 60 years ago but is relevant today.
About the photographer: Frank Winters is an award-winning fine art photographer. He recently moved to Olympia with his wife, Aurora, and is creating art that reflects his new surroundings.
When he lived in Massachusetts, he showed his work at The Provincetown Art Association and Museum, The Cotuit Center for the Arts. Here in Olympia, he has shown work at the Leo Fuller Gallery of SPSCC and other local galleries and shops. His photography is influenced by his love of poetry and the visual arts, particularly abstract and surrealist painting.
Frank and his wife have a large extended family, most living in Washington State. The reason they moved to Olympia was to be able to see them more often. The move to a new environment has been exciting and stimulating for them, affording many artistic opportunities.
