The public is invited to observe a team of researchers as they diagnose sediment conditions on the West Bay of Budd Inlet in a Public Observation Day event on March 4.
The Port of Olympia plans to conduct an educational boat tour with The Evergreen State College students and set up dockside viewing for people from Port Plaza Pier.
Port staff and members from consultant team, Dalton, Olmsted & Fuglevand, will be present to answer questions.
Using a vessel, the team aims to acquire sediment samples from more than 100 sites and will continue the work through March.
Port Executive Director Alex Smtih hopes to get the sediment analysis results by the end of the year, she said in an update to the Port of Olympia Commission on Monday, Feb. 10.
The sampling activity was timed to match the fishing window to the same time as last year when the port conducted a similar activity on East Bay.
The port collected 1,100 samples last year and is preparing to send the analysis results to the Department of Ecology.
The port intends to share the results once the Department of Ecology verifies the results, said Smith during the meeting.
The port noted in a press release that sampling techniques for this round will be similar in that samples will be taken from the sediment surface and down to 20 feet below the surface.
The eventual cleanup of West Bay will be different, though, due to features unique to that side of Budd Inlet, such as the marine terminal, Capitol Lake and private tideland properties.
The cleanup complies with a 2008 order from the Department of Ecology to investigate and remediate contaminants at the Budd Inlet due to historical industrial activities in the area.
