Public comment period open for Hardel Mutual Plywood cleanup

Posted

The Washington Department of Ecology is accepting public comments on the Hardel Mutual Plywood cleanup in West Bay.

Public comments may be submitted until Monday, June 2, at 11:59 p.m.

"This cleanup site in Olympia has been used for wood milling since the late 1800s. Hardel Mutual Plywood (Hardel) operated at this site from 1951 to 1996. Wood milling released hazardous substances into the environment," the Department of Ecology said in a summary.

"Hardel signed a legal agreement with Ecology in 2007 and cleaned up the site in 2010. In 2012, Ecology listed the cleanup as complete. West Bay Development Group (West Bay) bought the property from Hardel in 2021. West Bay discovered areas of contamination in soil and groundwater that were not found in the earlier cleanup work.

"Therefore, this site needs more cleanup to protect human health and the environment. Please note that this comment period is about cleanup, not development, of the site."

It is a bummer that there is still contamination in the soil and groundwater for sure, but most people on the west side will gladly take it if it means pushing back the development of the imminent West Bay Yards disaster

D.O.E. signed off on that prior "clean up".

It was incomplete in its Assessment.

Now, the DOE wants better? Cleanup.

So, How about we CAN the West Bay Yards altogether and Leave it Rest END THE WB Yards Project.
