The registration window is open for people interested in participating in a public hearing about the proposed closure of McKenny Elementary School in Olympia.

The public hearing is scheduled at the school on Oct. 12 at 6 p.m.  The school is located at 3250 Morse-Merryman Road SE.

“This hearing is an opportunity for families, staff and community members to share feedback with the (Olympia School District Board of Directors) regarding the possible consolidation of McKenny Elementary School,” the district’s website states.

Interested individuals need to register online for a spot to speak. They are not allowed to register for another individual.

There will also be on-site registration until 7 p.m., or one hour after the meeting begins. Participants may comment in person or via Zoom.

Speakers may speak up to three minutes, but it will be capped at two minutes if more than 50 people participate in the Olympia School District (OSD) hearing.

The registration page requires an answer to the commenter’s relationship with McKenny and will determine that person's position in the speaking list.

“The priority for list placement will be ordered as follows: (current student at McKenny, current OSD student who attended McKenny, current McKenny family members, current McKenny staff, current OSD student at a different school, and other community members),” the district's website states.

The next public hearing will be held for LP Brown on Oct. 15 at 6 pm. Registration for the hearing opens on Oct. 8.

The last hearing is for Madison Elementary School on Oct. 19 at 6 pm. Registration opens on Oct. 12.

The separate public hearings for each school are required under state law, as a public engagement effort before the final vote on whether to close schools takes place.

Close it down. The taxpayers should not be forced to further subsidize schools just so the local parents can have their convenience at the expense of everyone else forced to prop it up.
