Public Launch of Olympia's Hidden Histories Walking Tours

Posted

Welcome to Olympia's Hidden Histories, a series of self-guided walking tours (created by students and faculty at The Evergreen State College) that seek to make visible the natural and social histories of Washington state's capital city, revealing important connections to the rest of the world.

Each tour focuses on different layers of history along what was once the abundant Deschutes River Estuary, many of which have been erased over time from the general public memory.

Together, the tours reveal hard truths about how the landscape of Olympia today was created: through forced removal of the Indigenous inhabitants, destructive settler-colonial practices and industrial development, the racialized displacement of immigrant and working-class communities, and subsequent altering of the natural ecology. Yet equally as prevalent in this history is the resilience of the natural and social communities and the power of contemporary efforts for their revitalization.

This project has a series of tours, please visit the website to read more about each route.
