A storm system is likely to put a damper on outdoor activities this weekend in Thurston County, including a planned political rally at Heritage Park in Olympia that is expected to draw hundreds of people.
The National Weather Service Office in Seattle forecast calls for a 100 percent chance of precipitation on Saturday, Feb. 7, with new rainfall amounts between one-quarter and one-half of an inch possible.
The rain should be riding a south wind of 14 to 18 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 24 miles per hour. The high should be near 51 degrees.
There is also a 70 percent chance of precipitation on Saturday evening, with new rainfall amounts between one-tenth and one-quarter of an inch possible. The overnight low should be around 42 degrees.
The rain is courtesy of a Pacific frontal that will send a weak atmospheric river into the Pacific Northwest this weekend.
“Moderate to locally heavy rainfall is forecast across western Washington on Saturday, which may result in isolated flooding, and higher elevations of the Cascades will likely see some snowfall,” said the National Weather Service Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland in a short range forecast.
The wet forecast comes amid, yet, another in a series of political rallies in Olympia over the past year. The latest rally — dubbed Resist, Persist, Repeat! — is scheduled to take place from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday at Heritage Park.
The rally is being held to commemorate the first year of the 50501 Movement, a nationwide grassroots effort aimed at protesting the policies and actions of President Donald Trump since he took office in January 2025.
“We will honor the spirit of community that has been built, support ongoing efforts to mitigate the harm created by the Trump administration, and brace ourselves for the fight ahead!” said local organizer Evergreen Resistance in a message about the event.
There is an 80 percent chance of precipitation on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 8, with new rainfall amounts between one-quarter and one-half of an inch possible. The high should be near 49 degrees with a north, northeast wind around 5 miles per hour in the afternoon.
There is an 80 percent chance of precipitation on Sunday evening, with new rainfall amounts between one-tenth and one-quarter of an inch possible. The overnight low should be around 40 degrees. Rain is also likely on Monday, Feb. 9. Forecasts are subject to change.
