It might be Peyton Rhyne’s world, and we live in it.
The 22-year-old senior defender bailed out The Evergreen State College again, scoring the only goal of their 1-0 win over the University of Providence at the Argo Field in Montana last October 25.
This was her seventh goal of the season, making her the top scorer for the Geoducks, an impressive feat especially for a defender.
In less than a minute, right after a goalless first half, Rhyne received a short cross from Alexandra Foley, crossing from the right flank.
Then, she controlled the ball, spun her defender, and pinged a right-footed chip shot arcing above the Argos keeper Chloe Pajaro into the top bin of the goal to hand the lead to the visitors.
Before the momentum swung to the Geoducks, it was a one-sided first half in favor of the hosts, but the Geoducks were fortunate to concede none. The Argos sprayed seven shots in the first 45 and forced goalkeeper Anna Varela to be big in goal, with their best opportunity coming from a strike from Anna Varela just hitting the crossbar.
After leading, the Geoducks tightened the defense more, as Providence’s Jordan Fagert forced two huge saves from Varela in the 65th and 71st minute. But the Geoducks survived and held the lead until the final whistle.
This win is just the second for the Geoducks in the conference and third overall this season, as they improve to a 2-5-2 win-loss-draw record. A week before this fixture, Evergreen whipped the non-conference Walla Walla with a lopsided 9-1 win.
The Geoducks will close this year’s women’s soccer season this weekend with two home games. They will face Oregon Tech at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey on November 1, then the Southern Oregon University in Geoduck Pitch at Olympia the following day. Both games will kick off at 12:30 p.m.
