If you've a hankering to break out into an electrifying Kriss Kross Jump Dance or Moonwalk but haven’t perfected that time machine in your garage, come down this Saturday to the Totally Rad 80’s Prom Bash, a perfect way to ring out the old of 2022 while celebrating all that’s set to come in 2023!
Even more radical, it’s also a benefit for The JOLT!
More than just a New Year’s Eve bash
Spearheading this event is Bernetia Johnson of Love Local Events, herself a child of the 1980s. Bernetia fondly recalls the era of the Trapper Keeper and assures any and all that great pains have been taken in order to ensure that special 1980s vibe. The fine folks behind the Totally Rad 80’s Prom Bash know that there is any number of options for revelers on New Year’s Eve.
The Olympia Ballroom festivities will look forward to 2023 while casting a fond look back to the decade of Power Rock and Bugle Boys, known as the 1980s. To that very bodacious end, New Year’s Eve partygoers at the Olympia Ballroom can dip their big toes into more 80’s themed bric-a-brac than you can shake a proverbial box of Good & Plenty at!
Take a chill pill and listen to some bodacious tunes
What’s more 1980s than a spacious ballroom floor flooded with the music that defined a generation? Grab your significant other close and float away to Happy Land with the refrains of some of the most iconic bands as performed by the Big Love Band, renamed for the night as DN80s, and disco down to tunes spun by local music maestro extraordinaire DJ Matt. Hankering for the sweet sounds of A-ha, Journey, The Smiths and Chris Isaak? You’ve come to the right place.
But wait, there’s more!
The glorious centerpiece of the Totally Rad 80’s Prom Bash is one of the very best bands on the local Olympia scene, the Big Love Band, (rechristened as the DN80’s for this special evening). The five-piece band is led by Dan Walker, known for his solo guitar work, and singer Allison Hanlon. These full-time professional musicians will remind everyone why the 80s were the most rad time in all of the annals of music history. Trip the light fantastic and get set to enact your own take on The Robot as the DN80’s rock us into 2023!
"You don’t know what you will get at a Big Love show except for a damn good time," Walker told The JOLT today.
Here are some of the covers to expect: Fleetwood Mac (“Gypsy,” “Little Lies” and more), Men at Work (“Land Down Under”), The Bangals ("Walk like an Egyptian”), The B-52s (“Love Shack”), Michael Jackson (“Man in the Mirror”), A Flock of Seagulls (“I Ran”) and lots more.
Big Love is named after a Fleetwood Mac song written by Lindsey Buckingham.
Band members will include:
Band Leader/ Guitars - Dan Walker
Lead Vocals/ Flute - Allie Hanlon
Lead Vocals/ Keyboard - Amanda Ransom
Bass Guitar - Gary Hicker
Drums (Spare) - Scottie McDevitt and Chad Andres
Where’s the beef?
If all of the above still leaves you wanting more, then take a chill pill: Love Local Events and The JOLT News’ crew are making this New Year’s Eve soiree a trip back into time which would make Doc Brown and his trusty DeLorean green with envy. Starting with an impressive passel of appetizers and desserts (all sourced from local businesses), this is one party that won’t go gently into that good night.
Make full use of the ballroom’s cash bar while taking in any number of liquid refreshments, including signature cocktails of the Reagan years. Bonus points are to be had in the form of complimentary soda all night long for all of you Designated Drivers out there; get your Fresca and Coke 2 on!
Finally, memorialize this Blast from the Past before stepping out into the brand-spankin' new world which is 2023 by having Prom photos and selfies taken of you and all of your besties throughout the night at the righteous and totally tubular 80’s themed selfie stations!
