Roundabout installation planned for Fones Road in Olympia

Posted

The installation of a new roundabout and continued paving work are going to lead to partial closures on Fones Road for a few weeks, as the multimillion-dollar project takes another big step toward completion in Olympia.

Installation of the roundabout is scheduled to start as soon as Monday, July 27, while paving work will continue at the south driveway of Home Depot. The work, which is expected to take about three weeks, is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“To protect the new roundabout and splitter islands and ensure the safety of the traveling public, Fones Road will be closed to through traffic 24 hours a day until the work is complete,” said the City of Olympia Public Works Department in a construction and traffic alert.

“Access will be maintained to all homes and businesses, but passage through the area near the south entrance of Home Depot will not be allowed except for emergency vehicles and when necessary to allow people to reach their homes.”

Reduced lanes will remain in place through the end of construction, which is scheduled to sunset in fall.

Background

Construction on the Fones Road Corridor Project started in November 2024 with the goal of transforming it into a safer corridor for bicyclists, motorists, pedestrians and truckers.

The estimated cost of the corridor project is $24.5 million, with the City of Olympia contributing more than $13 million. The city has also received more than $11 million in grants from state and federal sources to help pay for the project.

The project also aims to create a safer connection to transit stops on 18th and Pacific avenues, as well as add landscaping and lighting along the corridor, which measures less than three-quarters of a mile.

Where exactly is the roundabout set for? I could see it being useful on both ends but seems like the Pacific Ave side may be the best bang for the buck. That series of lights along Pacific is kind of a mess right now.
