The Olympia City Council, on Tuesday, signed a proclamation designating 2023 as the 50th anniversary of Senior Services for South Sound.

The proclamation honors seniors as leaders, parents, grandparents, and leaders, as well as Senior Services of South Sound for helping seniors thrive.

Senior Services for South Sound was founded in Olympia in 1973 and currently serves thousands of seniors annually with nutrition, transportation, trips and tours, fitness, recreation, support groups, housing, and daycare for those with disabilities.

"Its mission is to improve the quality of life for people as they age and has grown to serve seniors all over Olympia, Thurston County, and Mason County," the proclamation stated.

Brian Windrope, Senior Services executive director, said the 50th anniversary also celebrates the partnership with Olympia that nurtured the organization. He highlighted the seniors whom their efforts have positively impacted.

"I want to say that a wise person once told me that it's the responsibility of each generation to take the baton and take things to the next level. I'm doing my best to do that," Windrope said.
