Seven people arrested after alleged group assault at 'The Jungle'

Seven people were arrested in the aftermath of an alleged attack on a woman at a homeless encampment in Olympia, which is known as "The Jungle."

The assault took place on June 18. It is being investigated as an attempted murder.

According to an Olympia Police Department report, the woman went into the encampment to return a newly-purchased bicycle that she bought from a friend. Instead, she was surrounded and beaten by a group of people who believed she was involved in their friend’s recent death.

The suspects arrested in connection with the case range in age from 29 to 44, the police department report states.

According to the victim, she was punched, kicked, hit with a baseball bat and a pistol, and that the attack went on for nearly an hour. The victim felt that the group intended to kill her.

The victim thought she could escape after someone arrived at the scene and told people to leave, but the alleged assailants followed her.

At one point, one of the suspects sprayed bear spray at the victim, but accidentally sprayed the other suspects, which allowed her to get away.

She was later found walking down Martin Way, covered in blood. Witnesses called 911, and police took her to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia. Doctors treated her for injuries, including two cuts on her head that required staples to close, along with bruises and swelling.

Officers located the scene of the attack inside the encampment, where they recovered blood evidence, two metal bats and other items.

The suspects face multiple charges, including first-degree attempted murder while armed with a firearm, first-degree conspiracy to commit murder, first-degree assault, first-degree conspiracy to commit assault, second-degree assault, harassment – threats to kill, and unlawful imprisonment.

Most readers here will be confused and perplexed that there are violent felonies in the Jungle, since they're "just our neighbors" in need of a hand up after losing their jobs.

And our crimes get free: legal fees, room and board, and health care. Our victims get NOTHING. Sad.

I didn't know people sold bicycles in the Jungle! Propane tanks, tents and awnings, back yard furniture -- the Jungle is our new modern shopping mall. I wonder if they are selling any fresh teen flesh this week... I also wonder when Olympia City Hall garners enough political leadership to shut this criminal den down. Grumble.

  • Back in the day, the men of the town would handle this with bats of their own. What is going to take for the city council to get enough police officers with spines to eradicate these camps and put an end to drug addled professional street bums roaming our streets?

I am ashamed of the above comments which are so ignorant and heartless. Don't judge before you have walked in another's shoes. I don't think anything I can say would change your minds but I just want people to know that not everybody thinks like you. Thanks to the Jolt for a very informative article.

Yesiree, the men with bats and guns are ready to solve this problem once and for all (NOT). Lots of bluster and infantile thought processes on full display in these comments. And a shout out to 'hptrillium' for pointing out the pure meanness and ignorance of some of these folks.

'Honestyandrealityguy' is neither Honest or aware of Reality...posting nonsense tropes about free things.

It seems you'd prefer just bussing the unfortunates to the county line and dumping them out there.?

The Jungle is its own community. Substance abuse illness. Mental illness. Violent people on drugs. A health and safety threat for those within the Jungle, and the community at large. How do we solve this in a humane way, AND put our foot down? It would be nice if this article attempted to discuss that.
