A transient Tumwater man was arrested after a passerby saw him shatter a window to enter a building.
According to reports by several Tumwater police officers, Trace Richard Kong, 33, was arrested on Feb. 13 after a reported burglary on the 1500 block of Irving Street.
The reporting party, a female passerby, told dispatchers that she saw a person standing in front of a building. She said the person appeared to be picking up something off the ground but reached back, struck the window, and entered the premises.
Police officers said they made several announcements identifying themselves and stating that anyone remaining inside the building was under arrest, but no one came out.
As they searched the building, authorities found a man, later identified as Kong, lying on the floor underneath a bathroom sink.
The suspect had small lacerations on his hands but received medical clearance.
Officers described Kong as wet and disheveled, mumbling “unintelligibly” about bugs on his body.
As he was being placed inside a police car, the suspect said, “I didn’t want to break it.”
No other persons were located inside the building. Police found a large rock inside a trash can in the area where Kong was found.
The suspect was booked at the Thurston County Jail for commercial burglary and vandalism.
