The South Sound Reading Foundation is celebrating 25 years of promoting reading across the region.

The foundation has given away free books and held literary programs for children and families since it was founded in 2001.

“Throughout this anniversary year, the (foundation) will honor its history, celebrate its impact, and invite the community to help write the next chapter,” said the foundation in announcing a series of upcoming events.

To celebrate its 25th year, a number of new and annual events are scheduled throughout the year, including the giveaway of the one millionth book and a benefit breakfast.

Millionth book

This spring, the organization will give away its 1,000,000th book as a “symbol of 25 years of partnership, generosity and belief” in the power of literacy.

The organization will celebrate the milestone at the Hands On Children’s Museum on Friday, April 3, from 5-7 p.m.

The venue will be transformed into a starry, magical adventure with a "Reading Under the Stars" concept, creative bookworm activity, raffles and goodie bags.

“This milestone belongs to our entire community,” said Executive Director Jennifer Williamson-Forster in a statement.

“Every volunteer, donor, educator, and partner has helped put a book into a child’s hands. Reaching one million books is extraordinary — but we’re just getting started.”

New book van campaign

The foundation is also preparing to launch a capital campaign to fund a new mobile book van, as the current van was vandalized and is no longer in service.

The foundation used the van as an essential vehicle for delivering books and literacy programs into communities.

“The van is critical to the (foundation’s) outreach efforts, allowing staff to bring books, reading support, and literacy programming directly to schools, community centers, housing communities, and local events. Currently, team members are using their personal vehicles to transport books and supplies,” the foundation said.

Signature events

Two of the foundation’s signature annual events will have a twist to celebrate the special anniversary in 2026.

The Readers are Leaders Benefit Breakfast on April 15 will feature special guest speakers, inspiring stories, the arc of the organization’s mission, and the presentation of Literacy Champion awards to individuals who promoted literacy in the lives of children in the South Sound.

The event is expected to draw more than 200 community leaders and professionals, with Drew Mikkelsen of KING5 News as the emcee.

The Books by the Bay event on Sept. 11, the foundation’s fall literacy gala, will feature acclaimed author Olufunke Grace  Bankole, who wrote "The Edge of Water. "

The event will also feature food, the foundation’s signature cocktail, lively music, a silent auction, a punch wall and more.
