SPSCC Orchestra: Clippers and Saints

Posted by rachelintheaudience

The SPSCC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Nickolas Carlson, presents Clippers and Saints on Saturday, December 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Kenneth J. Minneart Center of the Arts Main Stage.

The orchestra is joined by the Saint Martin’s University Wind Ensemble, conducted by Laura Harper.

The orchestra will play Brahms’ buoyant Academic Festival Overture and the first symphony written and published by an American woman, Amy Beach’s “Gaelic” Symphony. This symphony is full of passion and evokes the iconic landscapes and cultural richness of Scotland.

Notes from Carlson's conversation with Rachel Benton, JOLT Columnist "In the Audience":

"I chose the Brahms Academic Festival Overture because it is one of my favorite pieces, and I thought that this orchestra might enjoy playing the piece again (they played it several years ago). The Amy Beach symphony is an incredible piece of music and the first symphony composed by a woman to be premiered by a major American orchestra (the Boston Symphony). It contains several Irish folk tunes and some of Beach’s own melodies as themes.

I hope that audiences leave feeling reinvigorated and excited about where our community is excelling in the performing arts world."
