SPSCC seeking next cohort for Bachelor of Science program

South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) is recruiting students for its Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program.

The program, which launched in 2024, allows students to complete their full, four-year degree, without having to transfer to a traditional four-year university. Students take a combination of hybrid and online classes, as part of the process.

“Students can enter the program directly from high school or transfer in with a qualifying associate degree to begin upper-division—or 300-level—coursework,” said SPSCC Dean of Applied Technology Jason Selwitz in an announcement about the program.

“The curriculum is structured to be completed in four years for traditional students, or in two years (six quarters) for those entering at the 300-level.”

There will be a degree pathway offered for students at SPSCC, as well as Grays Harbor College.

“Students from Grays Harbor studying in these areas can also transfer seamlessly to SPSCC to complete their bachelor’s degree with us,” Selwitz said. “The hybrid and online model works well for students in Aberdeen and other cities outside of the Olympia area.”

Jordan McNair is a student in the first cohort of the program. He is on track to wrap up his final year of work in 2025.

“I was so excited to find out that SPSCC offered a bachelor’s in computer science, as it meant I didn’t have to leave the community college I had grown so fond of over the years," said McNair in a statement about the program.

"Because of the program, I was able to continue my valued role at the Start Here Desk, which has been incredibly accommodating of my class schedule. And since the software development associate degree I initially pursued was skills-based and non-transferable, the bachelor’s program provided a wonderful opportunity for me to apply those credits to my continued education."

Applications for the program are currently being accepted. People those interested in the program can attend virtual information sessions on July 29 and Sept. 3.
