In a historic first for the South Puget Sound Community College golf program, Luke Fenner bested all 53 other participants in the men’s category to win the Columbia Basin College (CBC) League Match Tournament last Tuesday, October 1, at the Horn Rapids Golf Course in Richland.
Fenner finished the tournament with a 144 gross score, scoring 72 for each of the two rounds. He had five birdies throughout the two-day tourney, including a clutch birdie on the final hole of the second day to clinch the individual men’s trophy.
“I don’t know, honestly. I’m more shocked than anything.” said a bewildered Fenner after his historic first-place finish in the tournament.
Fenner finished just one stroke above Jesus Castaneda of the hosts CBC and Milo Stover of Bellevue College, who finished tied for second place in the tournament.
The men’s golf team of the Clippers also had a decent showing in the tournament overall. Inspired by Fenner’s golden performance, SPSCC finished in fifth out of nine participating NWAC schools with a +72 over par performance, with notable performances from freshmen Carter Dorenbosch, who finished tied for 23rd, and Charlie Ancich, finishing tied for 35th place.
It was also an impressive performance for the women’s golf team of the Clippers, competing with a full squad for the first time. Freshman Audrey Williams also made history the first-ever woman golfer in SPSCC history to finish with a score lower than 100, finishing with a 99 in the second round of the tourney.
The hosts Columbia Basin College won both women’s and men’s team categories, while Jayda Thomas of Centralia College won the women’s individual category
“This win will serve as motivation to the rest of our team and shows the commitment the school and community has made to building a winning golf program at SPSCC,” said Clipper Head Coach for Golf Russell Olsen.
The Clippers golf teams will host the SPSCC Invitational on October 20-21 at Tumwater Valley to close off the first half of golf games this fall.
