St. Olaf Orchestra, TIME-magazine acclaimed “one of the best college orchestras in the nation”, will perform at Olympia High School on next Tuesday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m. as part of its national Washington and Oregon tour. Seven orchestra members come from western Washington, including Ann Li (violin) and Ella Cereghino (viola) of Olympia.
Hailing from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, St. Olaf Orchestra is a complete symphony orchestra noted for its spirited and passionate performances and rich in worldwide talent and heritage. . According to the university, the 95-member group, founded in 1906, has been lauded as one of the greatest collegiate orchestras in the country, winning the American Prize in Orchestral Performances among colleges and universities in 2013 and 2019.
Dr. Chung Park, the orchestra's recently appointed conductor, will conduct the St. Olaf Orchestra for his first trip leading the group. Park was a former UCF symphony and chamber orchestra conductor at the University of Central Florida. He also worked as a viola instructor, and head of string music education. Park keeps a busy schedule as a guest conductor and consultant in addition to his duties as conductor of the St. Olaf Orchestra.
The upcoming program next Tuesday includes Joseph Bologne's Symphony No. 1 in G Major, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, exceptional soloists from the St. Olaf Orchestra, and Tchaikovsky's thrilling and melancholy Symphony No. 6 Pathétique.
