Thurston County Auditor's Office announces update to voter rolls

Posted

An ongoing effort to ensure voter rolls remain accurate resulted in an update of more than 78,000 voter registration records in Thurston County in 2025.

Thurston County Auditor Mary Hall announced the update in a news release on Monday, Feb. 2.

“Our voter registration team maintains the voter rolls throughout the year,” said Hall in a statement. “We receive new and updated information from state and federal partners, as well as from voters themselves, to ensure our voter records remain accurate.”

Examples of these updates include:

  • 1,424 voter registrations canceled at the voter’s request.
  • 2,343 voter registrations canceled due to death.
  • 6,285 voter registrations moved to inactive status because of undeliverable mail. (Inactive voters do not receive a ballot unless they contact the Auditor’s Office to update their address.)

To maintain accurate voter registration data, the Thurston County Auditor’s Office works closely with trusted sources, including:

  • The Office of the Secretary of State
  • The Social Security Administration
  • The United States Postal Service National Change of Address program
  • Other state agencies, including Licensing, Health, Corrections, and the Office of the Administrator of the Courts

The Thurston County Auditor’s Office also removes registrations of deceased individuals using health department data, published obituaries, as well as written notices from relatives.

Washington state is a member of the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC), which uses data-matching software to compare voter registration and motor vehicle licensing records across 30 other states to ensure voters are not registered in multiple states. In 2025, the Auditor’s Office updated 2,148 voter records using ERIC data.

“We really appreciate the help voters provide by proactively updating their records or notifying us when someone in their household has passed away,” said Hall in a statement. “If voters receive a ballot for a deceased person, someone who has moved, or anyone who does not live at their address, they should contact the Auditor’s Office.”

Voters may also return ballots through the postal service by writing “Deceased” or “Not at this address” on the envelope and placing it in the mail.

I am hoping that AI can help get rid of the felons and dead people, not to mention the duplicate and fraudulent voters.

Does the County Auditor, Secretary of State or other governmental agency have information on the occurrence of any of the problems noted by Honestyandrealityguy? waltjorgensen@comcast.net

It would be pertinent and informative to see more reasons why there was more than 78,000 updates on voters in the county: Only about 10,000 were shown.

Honestyandrealityguy, you have misnamed yourself. People with felony convictions who have served their sentence and been released, have their voting rights restored and can legally vote in Washington. Dead people do not vote. Duplicate and fraudulent voters have never been a problem or affected the outcome of an election here. What is your real issue? Who do you really want to stop from voting?

Honestyandrealityguy; I suggest you volunteer as a 'Watcher' during the next elections. You will see, as I did, that there are multiple repetitions of confirming legitimacy of voter signatures, as well as reading and verifying of submitted ballots. There are checks and cross checks. I am extremely confident that voting system in Washington is safe and secure.

November 12, 2020, a joint statement from federal, state, and local election officials—including the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA)—declared the 2020 election "[the most secure in American history]". The Trump Admin has never presented any proof of wide spread voter fraud and most has been committed by Republicans.

We need to ensure our rights to mail-in ballots so we can avoid voter intimidation ( which is the stated Republican plan) and the right for the States to conduct the voting process as is our right as a State.
