The Thurston County Clerk's Office will discontinue its in-person customer service counter on Jan. 20, in a budget-driven closure that eliminates walk-in access and direct assistance for protection order applicants.
County Clerk Linda Myhre Enlow announced the shutdown in a statement released on Wednesday, Dec. 31.
The counter currently operates from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Applicants seeking protection orders will instead pick up forms and submit them online for processing.
To bridge the gap, the office is now banking on digital platforms to absorb the workload. Filing documents, requesting copies of court records, accessing public cases, making payments and scheduling appointments can be done remotely through the clerk's website.
Public terminals for document viewing will stay open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
Enlow pitched the revamp as an upgrade rather than a service reduction.
“The office is hopeful that this shift to online services will improve service efficiency, enhance accessibility, and expand digital options for the community,” said Enlow in a statement.
Convenience for residents was also emphasized in the statement.
"By expanding online options, we are making it hopefully easier for the public to conduct essential business from home or work, without the need to visit our office in person," Enlow said.
The clerk's office asked for the public's "understanding and cooperation during this difficult time" and said it "remains committed to maintaining high-quality, accessible service for all."
For assistance and support, residents can email at TCClerk@co.thurston.wa.us during regular business hours or visit the Thurston County Clerk's Office website.
