Thurston County Food Bank names Jay Kang its first CEO

Thurston County Food Bank has appointed Jay Kang as its new chief executive officer, effective Tuesday, November 1.

Kang, currently the Lutheran Community Services Northwest’s Senior District Director for Puget Sound, has more than 35 years of working in faith-based and community non-profit organizations, said the Food Bank in a press release.

“Jay will be the organization’s first CEO,” the statement pointed out, “as the Food Bank had been under the same Executive Director leadership for the past eighteen years.”

Former executive director Robert Coit finished his duties on October 21, according to Judy Jones, the organization's development director.

A resident of Pierce County, Kang has also been involved with immigrant and refugee communities, working with groups such as the Korean Women’s Association, Neighborhood House, and Safefutures Youth Center.

“The Board is excited to have Jay join the Thurston County Food Bank to guide the organization into the next 50 years,” said the Food Bank.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Kang has a Bachelor of Arts in Religion degree from Alliance University in New York, NY, and a Master in Divinity and Master of Arts in Counseling from Missio Seminary in Philadelphia, PA.

I do not think that non-profit organizations or government agencies should use corporate titles for their staff.

Our food bank needs a "manager" not a "Chief Executive Officer." Because it is a relatively large non-profit, maybe a title like "Executive Director" is appropriate.

I am very hostile to CEOs who make big pay. The CEO of Providence Health was paid $11 million in 2019, according to their Form 990, filed with the IRS. 24 other Providence employees were paid more than $1 million that year. Wonder why health care is so expensive? I guess that's one way to be a "non-profit" ... charge high prices for services, pay your management oodles of money, and charge it to Medicare and Medicaid (which is the source of about 70% of the Providence revenue according to their annual report to the State Department of Health) at: https://doh.wa.gov/sites/default/files/2022-05/YE159-2021.xlsx?uid=635b4a7404c27

By contrast, the Executive Director of the Food Bank was paid $122,000 that year. That still seems like a lot to me -- more than any salary I ever received. But only 1% of what the CEO of Providence was paid. You read that right: the CEO of Providence was paid 100 times what the executive director of the food bank was paid.

The food bank is a crucial part of our community. It needs our support. But, I will find it a little more difficult to donate in the future, due to this adoption of a corporate title.

Fortunately Coastal Harvest, the central food bank in Grays Harbor County, still has only an "Executive Director" and he was paid only $48,000. That is the kind of "working for the community" that encourages me to donate generously.

Consider looking at the Form 990 before you donate to a charity. It tells you how much of their money goes to providing program services, and how much goes to admin. It also tells you how much they pay their highest paid staff members. That tells you a lot about them.
