Thurston County officials warn of jury duty scam

Posted

A warning was issued regarding a phone scam about missed jury service in Thurston County.

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office and County Jury Administration today issued the warning on Friday, Dec. 12.

"The (county) has received reports of scam callers telling residents they missed jury service and demanding money, bank details and confidential personal information. The scammers then make aggressive threats of arrest for 'failure to appear," said the county in the warning.

"Officials say scammers are trying to prey on people’s fear of the legal system, but the (county's) jury service communications policies are clear: No Thurston County employee will ever call and demand bank account details or Social Security numbers for a missed a jury summons. If you get a call like this, hang up immediately. It’s a scam."

About the scam calls

  • The threat – Callers falsely claim jury duty was missed and threaten arrest.
  • The demand – Callers demand bank account and Social Security numbers, or wire transfers, gift cards, or some form of payment to “clear the warrant.”
  • County policy – Official jury communications are by mail. If you miss jury service, county employees won't contact you by phone.

What to do

  • If you get a call – Hang up immediately. Don’t engage in conversation.
  • If you already got a call like this and gave out information, report it.
  • If you want to verify your jury service – Check the county’s website or call 360-754-4109.
  • Report scams to Thurston County sheriff's nonemergency line at 360-704-2740.

When I received the first call, I immediately call the sherriff's office and was warned of the scam. When I got the second call, I simply said it was a scam and the caller told me that he was coming to my home to shoot my wife in the head. These people are horrible.

I believe we should be able to only receive calls from a phone number that is traced back to its physical origin before our phone even rings. These people are crazy. Hopefully, AI will help.

When I have received one of these calls, first I ask who they are trying to reach. Once a name is given, I tell the caller to phone the person’s work number, saying when they reach the non emergency police number just ask to be transferred to extension xxx.

I’ve also answered an obvious scam call by answering, “ Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, how can I direct your call?” Works every time.

    LOL

Who are these you are quoting? Does that say the fear is unjust? You made it clear that the general public is fearful.
