Thurston County opens ‘Homegrown and Handmade’ art contest to local creators

Posted

Thurston County is now setting the table for homegrown artists to contribute to its newest exhibition, “Homegrown and Handmade.”

The countywide contest will accept entries of any medium from residents of all backgrounds between May 27 and May 30.

The exhibition’s theme provides an opportunity for all residents to examine what binds them to Thurston County. It may revolve on historical landmarks, memory, agriculture, landmarks, cultural experiences or shared customs.

Artists are also asked to use their work to express what makes them feel anchored in the community.

The county has confirmed the competition is open to all residents, including professionals, hobbyists, children and college students. County government employees may also participate, even if they live outside the county lines.

All age brackets are eligible, with specific judging categories for youths (ages 17 and under), adults (18 and above) and Thurston County employees. Each entry will be reviewed under its appropriate category.

Submissions can take the form of paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, prints, printed digital art and mixed media. Recordings of music and dance are also welcome. There are no limits on artwork size, but the county notes oversized or heavy entries may be harder to display.

In terms of content, the county advises that all work must be appropriate for public view. Artists are advised that any work submitted should be within the bounds of family-friendly content. Artworks containing mature themes, sensitive imagery, or political messages may be disqualified.

To determine the winners, the Thurston County Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) will judge the submissions along with select county staff. A “People’s Choice” winner will also be chosen through Facebook voting from June 9-12.

The announcement of all winning entries is expected during the BoCC business meeting on June 17. Winners will receive certificates and the opportunity to have their work featured at county government offices for public display.

According to the county, up to three pieces of art can be entered, but each needs its own entry form.

Artists must deliver their submissions in person between May 27 and May 30 to the Atrium at 3000 Pacific Ave. SE, Olympia.

Artists seeking additional details regarding eligibility, artwork dimensions, submission guidelines or content restrictions may contact the county through the official contest email: artcontest@co.thurston.wa.us.
