A Thurston County Sheriff's Office deputy shot a man multiple times at the scene of a car fire after he failed to obey a directive and charged at the law enforcement officer.

The incident happened at approximately 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, at the undisclosed scene of a car fire.

"The property in question was flagged as a caution due to prior violent criminal activity, prohibiting firefighters from responding alone," said Sheriff Derek Sanders in a social media post on Thursday.

"Upon arrival, a lone (Thurston County Sheriff's Office) deputy gave an individual (order) to step away from the fire which were ignored. The suspect then charged at the deputy before producing a firearm. The deputy shot the suspect numerous times."

Sanders said once additional units arrived on scene, deputies and law enforcement officers detained the suspect. They also removed a second firearm from the man, and rendered medical aid by applying tourniquets.

The suspect was taken to an undisclosed hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening.

"No first responders or uninvolved persons were injured. The deputy has been placed on standard administrative leave. The Region 3 Critical Incident Investigation Team will be conducting an independent investigation," said Sanders in the social media post.
