Thurston County announces 3rd annual art contest, invites artists to capture county in motion

Creative residents in Thurston County are once again being invited to showcase their best work.

In a news release issued on April 23, the Thurston County Board of County Commissioners announced the return of its annual art contest. Now in its third year, the contest is open to residents of all ages and skill levels, with drop-offs running from May 18-29.

This year's theme is "Thurston in Motion," an invitation to "capture the energy and movement" of the county through any creative lens. Artists are encouraged to find inspiration in the county's changing seasons, active communities and evolving landscapes.

The county is accepting entries in a variety of mediums, from paintings and drawings to collages, prints, mixed media, digital art, photography and sculpture.

Board Chair Tye Menser cited last year's turnout as a reflection of the county's creative depth.

“The Thurston County Art Contest has been enthusiastically embraced by our community, with more than 100 submissions last year showcasing an extraordinary level of talent,” said Menser, adding he looks forward to seeing how residents turn this year’s theme into something uniquely their own.

Entry guidelines

Artists may submit up to three pieces of artwork. A separate completed entry form, however, is required for each piece and must be brought along at drop-off time. The county is not charging an entry fee.

Artwork must be dropped off in person at one of four locations across the county. All locations will be closed on May 25 in observance of Memorial Day.

  • Thurston County Atrium, 3000 Pacific Ave, Olympia — 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, May 18-29
  • Thurston County Public Works, 9605 Tilley Road SW, Olympia — 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, May 18-29
  • City of Yelm, 106 Second St. SE, Yelm — 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, May 18-28
  • City of Rainier, 102 Rochester St. W, Rainier  — 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, May 18-28

Judging is divided into five categories. Two are age-based: youths, ages 17 and under, and adults, 18 and older. The remaining three are Thurston County employees, Gallery Viewing Choice and Facebook Choice, a voting competition held on the county's official Facebook page in June. The public, art industry members and county commissioners will serve as judges.

The community can view entries in person at a public gallery show on June 11-12. Winners will then be formally announced at the county board meeting on June 23.
