Thurston County retained its rank as the 8th healthiest out of the 39 counties in Washington, according to the 2022 County Health Rankings and Roadmaps (CHRR).
Thurston's Resident Epidemiologist Mary Ann O'Garro presented the rankings to the Board of Health at its June 14 meeting.
"We would always love to improve, that is our goal, but we did maintain," said O'Garro.
O'Garro said that the county is still optimistic that it did not go down in the rankings amid the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. She added that the rankings were based on the ratio of length of life and the quality of life.
San Juan County in western Washington was named as the healthiest county, while Ferry County, in rural eastern Washington, ranked last.
9th in health factors
When measuring the health factors that predict the future health outcome of the counties, Thurston ranked 9th in the latest CHHR ranking— lower from its 6th spot in 2021.
"We're still really good compared to other places, but it is something that we need to keep an eye on," said O'Garro.
The ranking of health factors was based on the county's health behaviors, clinical care, social and economic factors and physical environment.
The CHHR is an annual national ranking system by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute in partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Being ranked 8th is the same as being the #7 Loser. Is there a trophy for that?
